Andy Warhol, Gun (1981, 2)
After Andy’s assassination attempt (1968) at the hands of Valerie Solanas, Andy became almost obsessed with death and violent imagery (electric chairs, nuclear explosions, etc). He stopped using these kind of images during the 70’s but started using them again in the 80’s (Guns, Knives, etc). This gun is almost identical to that that almost killed him in 1968.
This piece was sold for $7,026,500 at the Contemporary Art Evening Sale, 10 May 2012, New York.
Thought: Why does man kill? He kills for food. And not only food: frequently there must be a beverage. - Woody Allen
